In a remarkable turn of events, SK Eternix, the renewable energy division of South Korea’s SK Group, has witnessed an impressive surge in its stock value, climbing over 114% in just one month. This surge is largely fueled by investor confidence that the burgeoning infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI) will substantially boost the demand for renewable energy sources. As of Friday, the company’s stock settled at 80,900 won, equivalent to US$55.35, reflecting a significant 114.6% increase from the previous month. This performance stands in stark contrast to the benchmark Kospi index, which saw a decline of 20.9%, and SK hynix, SK Group’s leading semiconductor firm, whose shares fell by 31.2% during the same period.
The upward momentum for SK Eternix intensified further this week, with a notable 44.9% rise over the last five trading days. Institutional investors showed strong interest, acquiring shares worth a net 106.8 billion won, while foreign investors added a net 79 billion won to their holdings. Analysts interpret this robust performance as a reflection of the anticipated long-term increase in renewable energy demand driven by AI data centers, which are known for their substantial electricity requirements. Additionally, the South Korean government’s commitment to enhancing clean energy capacity has bolstered investor confidence in the sector.
In June, the South Korean government announced projections indicating that significant industrial initiatives, including AI data centers and semiconductor manufacturing clusters, would lead to an additional electricity demand of 39.7 gigawatts. This announcement aligns with the government’s broader objective of expanding renewable energy capacity to 100 gigawatts by the year 2030. Such policy measures are seen as critical drivers for the future growth of the renewable energy market in South Korea.
Further adding to investor optimism is SK Eternix’s planned joint venture with global private equity firm KKR, valued at 2 trillion won. This collaboration is expected to accelerate SK Eternix’s expansion within the clean energy sector, further strengthening its position and growth prospects. As the world increasingly pivots towards sustainable energy practices, SK Eternix’s strategic moves and governmental support seem poised to propel the company into a leading role in the renewable energy landscape.
