The European Union has implemented a new charge on low-value e-commerce parcels entering its member countries, establishing a €3 ($3.40) customs handling fee. This initiative primarily targets shipments from international online platforms like Shein, Temu, and AliExpress, which previously enjoyed an exemption from customs duties.
This fee will be applied per customs classification within a parcel, meaning that a shipment containing varied product categories will incur multiple charges, while parcels comprising identical items will be subject to a single €3 fee. EU authorities have introduced this measure in an effort to counteract what they perceive as unfair competition and to curb the exploitation of customs exemptions that have enabled foreign e-commerce retailers to offer goods at significantly reduced prices.
In recent years, the EU has witnessed a significant surge in the number of low-value parcels crossing its borders, a trend driven by the burgeoning growth of cross-border online shopping.
