This directive will impact approximately 471 planes, with inspections slated to commence in September. The focus of these inspections is the bear strap, a structural element that provides support around the aircraft’s exit doors. This attention follows the discovery of similar issues in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which led to checks of those aircraft.
Although the 737 Max has not yet exhibited any such cracks, the FAA has indicated that the design and manufacturing processes for the Max are similar to those of the affected Next Generation aircraft.
